Sustainability.

Powering the North, Protecting Our Future

At NTPC, renewable energy is not new to us: hydroelectric dams generate 75% of our power in an average year. We are building on this legacy by expanding our renewable energy portfolio, reducing our reliance on fossil fuels, and lowering our greenhouse gas emissions.

Fueling Resilience

Sustainability means more than clean energy — it means empowering stronger communities and a more prosperous economy. In alignment with the Government of NWT’s 2030 Energy Strategy and guided by our strategic plan, NTPC is leading the charge toward a cleaner, more reliable future. We are working towards:

  • Lowered emissions from electricity generation, aligned with the GNWT’s 2030 Energy Strategy

  • Reduced reliance on diesel, which currently fuels 25 plants across 26 remote communities

  • Stable rates through cost-efficient renewables and long-term planning

  • Community partnerships that put local priorities at the heart of our projects

  • More resilient infrastructure, built to withstand climate and geographic challenges

Our Sustainability Action Plan

We’re taking bold, practical steps to reduce emissions, modernize infrastructure, and build lasting partnerships that benefit people and the planet.

Reducing Fuel Use

Diesel is expensive and produces greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change. We’re cutting consumption through:

  • Increased LNG capacity

  • Use of summer fuels in communities accessible by road that produce lower greenhouse gas emissions

  • Fuel-efficient diesel generators

  • Integrating community solar and wind projects

  • Supporting Power Purchase Agreements with local providers

  • Adding more electric heat customers in communities with excess hydro capacity

Expanding Green Energy

Renewables like hydro, solar, and wind are central to our plan:

  • Refurbishing existing hydro assets

  • Supporting new hydro development through Indigenous partnerships

  • Boosting solar, wind, and other forms of renewable generation in diesel communities

Electrifying the Territory

To reach net-zero:

  • Develop EV corridors and expand electric heating

  • Extend transmission lines to connect isolated communities

  • Modernize grids to support distributed and renewable energy
